Letter to the Brokenhearted

When you meet someone

and you know they’ll break your heart,

don’t run away. Wait

for notes and flowers

and love songs and sweet vows. Let

them love you softly.

You know it will come:

missed calls and angered texts,

Hasty words, sour regret.

Let it come, gently;

wrap yourself in warm blankets

and broken-heart songs.

Remember to love

the people who’ll break your heart,

smile and walk away.

Heal your scars and sleep

soundly. Tomorrow, you’ll learn

how to love yourself.
